When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose EUR. The rate it offers is almost always worse.
Italian restaurants charge a "coperto" (cover charge, typically 1–3€) that covers bread and service. An additional tip is not expected, but rounding up by 1–2€ or leaving small change is a polite gesture if the service was exceptional.
Bargaining is not practiced in Italian shops or restaurants. At antique markets (like Porta Portese in Rome) and some street stalls, politely asking "c'è uno sconto?" (is there a discount?) may yield 5–10% off unique items.

In Rome, Florence and Milan, scammers thrust a 'free' friendship bracelet or rose onto tourists near the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain or Duomo, then aggressively demand 10–20 euros. Others use 'charity petitions' as a distraction while an accomplice pickpockets you. Keep hands in pockets, bags zipped in front, and never stop when approached.
At Rome Fiumicino (FCO), Milan Malpensa and the Termini station taxi rank, unlicensed greeters approach arrivals and offer rides at inflated prices. Rome sets a fixed fare of 55 euros from Fiumicino to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, in an official white taxi with a Roma Capitale plate. Malpensa also has a flat fare to central Milan, so check the rate posted at the rank before you get in. Ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal and use only the marked taxi rank outside.
Venice charged day visitors a 5 euro access fee, booked online in advance, on peak days from April until 27 July 2026, when the trial period ended. The city has not yet decided whether it returns in later years, so check cda.ve.it before you travel. Swimming, bathing or diving in the canals is banned and costs up to 350 euros plus a 48 hour ban from the city. Sitting or lying on steps, bridges and monuments, and eating while sitting on the ground, is fined 100 to 200 euros, and picnics in public areas are banned. Riding a bicycle in the historic centre carries a 100 euro fine. There is no ban on wheeled suitcases.
Italian police fine tourists up to 3,000 euros for buying fake designer bags, sunglasses or watches from unlicensed street vendors in Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice. The offence is committed by the BUYER, not the seller, on-the-spot fines and confiscation apply even for a single cheap handbag bought near the Duomo or on the Ponte di Rialto.
The Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei) west of Naples are Europe's most seismically active volcanic caldera, magnitude 4.4 earthquakes recurred in 2024 and 2025. Vesuvius and Stromboli remain on heightened alert. Before visiting Pompeii, Ischia or the Naples area, check INGV data (ingv.it) and the Protezione Civile app, and know your hotel's evacuation route.
The "corna" gesture (index and pinky extended) implies someone's partner is unfaithful, never use it casually. Don't order cappuccino after 11 AM (locals find it strange). Never put parmesan on seafood pasta.
Italian extra virgin olive oil from Tuscany, Puglia, or Sicily is a timeless culinary gift, look for DOP certification. Leather goods from Florence's artisan workshops (especially around Santa Croce) offer authentic craftsmanship. Limoncello from the Amalfi Coast, aged balsamic vinegar from Modena, and artisan pasta shapes make excellent kitchen souvenirs. Murano glass from Venice is iconic but buy from certified furnaces.
Italy has an extensive tolled motorway network. Take a ticket at entry and pay at exit, white lanes are cash, blue are card, yellow are Telepass only. Milan–Rome costs €42–47; budget €70–100+ for a full north-south trip. Mountain tunnels like Brenner and Mont Blanc have separate, steep tolls.
