Emergency numbers in Kenya

Not sure who you need? Call this one. 999 Emergency number Covers police, ambulance, and fire brigade

Kenya's police, ambulance and fire services all answer on 999. Response is slower outside Nairobi and the main cities, and public ambulances are scarce, so many travellers reach hospital by taxi or private car. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is worth having.

Medical costs

  • Doctor visit Private clinic, general consultation without insurance $20 – $150 ≈ KES 2,590–19,400
  • Hospital night One night in a general ward without insurance $70 – $350 ≈ KES 9,070–45,300
  • Ambulance Emergency transport to hospital $25 – $150 ≈ KES 3,240–19,400
  • Dentist Check-up or basic treatment at a private practice $10 – $80 ≈ KES 1,300–10,400

Typical private prices a tourist pays without insurance.

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Food, hands & elder respect

Never refuse offered food, it's considered disrespectful and a rejection of hospitality. Always use your right hand for greetings and eating, as the left hand is considered unclean. When meeting a group, always greet elders first as a sign of respect, age is deeply honored in Kenyan culture.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Kenyan coffee & Maasai beadwork

Kenyan AA coffee is prized worldwide, buy single-origin beans from local roasters in Nairobi for the best value. Maasai beaded jewelry (bracelets, necklaces, earrings) supports local artisans and is colorful and unique. Soapstone carvings from Kisii and sisal baskets (kiondo) are traditional Kenyan crafts. Kenyan tea (the country is the world's largest exporter), Kazuri ceramic beads, and macadamia nuts round out the options.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Nairobi expressway tolls

The 27 km Nairobi Expressway is Kenya's only toll road. It uses a distance-based system with fees ranging from KES 170 to KES 500. Payment options include Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) with an OBU device, MTC cards, mobile money (M-Pesa), or cash at toll booths. No other toll roads currently exist in Kenya.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • The Great Migration in the Masai Mara sees over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras cross from Tanzania every year between July and October.
  • Kenya pioneered mobile money with M-Pesa. Over 90% of adults use it for everything from paying for groceries to transferring money. Tourists can use it too.
  • Kenya, particularly the Kalenjin tribe from the Rift Valley highlands, has produced the majority of the world's top long-distance runners.

How much does a day in Kenya cost, without flights and hotel?

Roughly KES 2,160 (about $17) a day at fair prices, or KES 7,100 (about $55) at tourist prices. That covers two meals, a coffee, a bottle of water, a beer, two transit rides and a short taxi ride.
