When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose AED. The rate it offers is almost always worse.
In the UAE, tip 10–15% in restaurants if a service charge isn't already included in the bill; hotel staff and taxi drivers appreciate 5–10 AED.
Haggling is expected in traditional souks for items like spices, textiles, and gold. Start by offering 40–50% of the initial price and aim to settle around 60–70%. Maintain a friendly, respectful demeanor; cash is often preferred for better deals. Fixed prices apply in modern malls.

Bounced cheques in the UAE are now handled as civil enforcement rather than as a crime, after the 2022 commercial transactions reform. The returned cheque itself works as an enforcement instrument, so a creditor can go straight to execution, and once a cheque case reaches court a travel ban can follow immediately. Debts above 10,000 AED are a common trigger. Settle every bill before you fly out, request a clearance certificate when you close a UAE account, and never cosign a loan.
Kissing, swearing and rude gestures in public can trigger 2,000–5,000 AED fines and deportation. Dubai Mall security filed 40+ tourist cases in 2024. Women must cover shoulders and knees outside pools and beaches in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah (stricter). Middle-finger emojis in WhatsApp fall under the cybercrime law. Keep PDA indoors, dress modestly in malls, and never insult someone online while on UAE WiFi in dirhams.
Dubai DXB swabs luggage for drug traces: 0.003 grams triggers arrest and 2-4 year sentences (poppy seeds on clothing have jailed tourists). Tramadol, codeine and CBD are banned; bring a doctor's note and the UAE Ministry of Health approval for any controlled medicine. Wash clothes before travel, avoid CBD/hemp products entirely, and declare all prescriptions in English + Arabic in advance.
Summer temperatures in Dubai and Abu Dhabi exceed 48 °C with 90% humidity: 80+ heat-stroke tourist hospitalisations per year. Winter brings sandstorms closing E11 highway and flash floods in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah (150 mm rain in hours). Desert-safari dune bashing causes whiplash injuries. Check UAE Met Office app, carry 4 L of water per person in dirhams cost, avoid outdoor sights 12:00–16:00 from May to September.
In the UAE call 999 for police and any general emergency, 998 for an ambulance and 997 for the fire brigade (Civil Defence). These numbers work across all seven emirates. The UAE government does not list 112 as an emergency number, so use 999 instead.
Never show the soles of your feet or shoes to anyone, it's considered deeply insulting. Don't point at people with your finger; use an open hand gesture instead. Public displays of affection (even holding hands for unmarried couples) can lead to legal trouble, keep physical contact private.
Premium dates stuffed with nuts, chocolate, or orange peel are the UAE's most popular gift. Bateel and Al Nassma are top brands. Oud (agarwood) perfume is the Gulf's signature fragrance, visit perfumeries in Dubai's gold and spice souks for authentic blends. Saffron from Iran (widely sold in UAE markets) is excellent quality. Arabic coffee (gahwa) sets with dallah pots, gold jewelry (Dubai has competitive prices), and camel milk chocolate are other distinctive picks.
The UAE uses fully electronic toll systems: Salik in Dubai and Darb in Abu Dhabi. There are no toll booths; charges are deducted automatically via RFID tags (Salik) or license plate recognition (Darb). Rental cars are pre-equipped; tolls are billed to your rental contract. Fees are typically AED 4 per crossing.
