Scams and safety in Ethiopia

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Law Conflict zones, Tigray and Amhara restrictions

Conflict zones, Tigray and Amhara restrictions: the FCDO advises against all travel to the Tigray, Amhara and Gambela regions and to the western and northern zones of Oromia, and against all but essential travel to Benishangul-Gumuz and to areas within 10 km of the Eritrean border in Afar. Fighting between Fano militia and the security forces continues across Amhara, and roads such as the A3 face added checkpoints and closures by the national defence force. Check gov.uk before every leg, avoid overland border crossings, carry a paper map because mobile networks are cut during unrest, and note that you may take no more than 3,000 birr in or out of the country.

Health Altitude, yellow fever and hospital scarcity

Addis Ababa sits at 2,355 m: 40% of tourists get altitude symptoms. Simien Mountains trek peaks at 4,550 m. Ethiopia requires yellow-fever vaccine from endemic-country arrivals. Hospitals outside Addis lack English-speaking staff and supplies; medical evac to Nairobi (10,000–30,000 USD budget in birra). Get vaccinated 10+ days before, acclimatise slowly, use DEET 30%+, and carry insurance with Nairobi evac rider.

Emergency numbers in Ethiopia

Not sure who you need? Call this one. 991 Police

Ethiopia has no single universal emergency number. Dial 991 for police, 907 for an ambulance (Ethiopian Red Cross, toll free), and 939 for fire and rescue. Cover is most reliable in Addis Ababa. Outside the capital, response can be slow or unavailable, so agree an emergency plan with your hotel or tour operator. Calls are usually answered in Amharic.

Medical costs

  • Doctor visit Private clinic, general consultation without insurance $10 – $30 ≈ ETB 1,630–4,890
  • Hospital night One night in a general ward without insurance $15 – $50 ≈ ETB 2,440–8,140
  • Ambulance Emergency transport to hospital $50 – $250 ≈ ETB 8,140–40,700
  • Dentist Check-up or basic treatment at a private practice $10 – $50 ≈ ETB 1,630–8,140

Typical private prices a tourist pays without insurance.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Gursha honor & meal etiquette

Never eat with your left hand, always use your right hand, especially when eating from the shared injera platter. Don't refuse gursha, when someone feeds you by hand, it's a gesture of deep affection and honor, and refusing it is very offensive. Don't rush meals, eating in Ethiopia is a social ceremony, and hurrying through it signals disrespect to your hosts.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Ethiopian coffee & Netela scarves

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, bring home Yirgacheffe or Sidamo beans and a traditional jebena (clay coffee pot) for an authentic ceremony at home. Netela and gabi (handwoven cotton scarves and shawls) are beautiful, lightweight textiles. Berbere spice mix is essential for Ethiopian cooking. Mesob baskets, Ethiopian crosses, and tej (honey wine) are other meaningful picks.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee. Legend says a goat herder named Kaldi discovered it when his goats became energized after eating coffee berries.
  • Ethiopia uses its own calendar, which is 7-8 years behind the Gregorian calendar. The Ethiopian year has 13 months: 12 of 30 days plus one of 5 or 6.
  • Ethiopia is widely recognized as the only African nation that was never colonized by a European power, maintaining its sovereignty throughout the Scramble for Africa. This unique history is a profound source of national pride and cultural identity for Ethiopians.
