South African rand (ZAR)

When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose ZAR. The rate it offers is almost always worse.
Tip 10–15% in South African restaurants; car guards (informal parking attendants) expect 5–10 ZAR when you return to your car, and petrol station attendants appreciate a 3–5 ZAR tip.
Bargaining is not practised in South African shops, supermarkets, or malls, prices are fixed; negotiation is only acceptable at informal township markets and some craft stalls, where starting at 70–80% is reasonable.

South Africa still has power cuts, though planned load shedding has fallen sharply and long stretches now pass with none at all. When it does hit, hotel key cards, traffic lights, ATMs and alarms all go down, and crime rises where lighting and security fail. SACAA rules require an RPL licence to fly a drone over anything urban, with fines up to 50,000 rand. Bringing a firearm without a SAPS temporary import permit can mean years in prison. Keep a power bank charged, never fly a drone near stadiums or airports, and never travel with a firearm unless it is pre approved.
Travelers should be up to date on routine vaccinations including measles mumps rubella and diphtheria tetanus pertussis due to recent outbreaks. There is also a rabies outbreak in Cape fur seals so avoid contact with seals and consider pre exposure vaccination for water sports.
Table Mountain National Park is the scene of regular muggings and violent attacks on hikers, including on Lion's Head and Signal Hill, and the tablecloth cloud can close in within minutes and strand you. Kruger has had fatal incidents involving both crime and wildlife, and SANParks advises avoiding the Numbi gate. Around Cape Town a shark flag system warns when sharks are about. Hike in groups of four or more on busy marked trails, never leave your vehicle in Kruger, and obey the shark spotter flags.
South Africa has no single national fire number: fire brigades are run by each municipality. Dial 112 from a mobile phone and ask for the fire brigade, or call 10111 for police and 10177 for an ambulance. 112 works from a mobile phone only, not from a landline.
Don't make the "come here" gesture with an upturned palm, it's considered offensive in South Africa. Give and receive items with your right hand or both hands as a sign of respect. Avoid discussing race casually, it's a deeply sensitive topic given the country's history, and careless comments can cause serious offense.
Rooibos tea grows only in South Africa's Cederberg region, buy organic loose-leaf for the best flavor. Biltong (dried cured meat) is South Africa's iconic snack, just check customs rules before packing. South African wine from Stellenbosch or Franschhoek rivals the world's best. Amarula cream liqueur, Zulu beadwork, Ndebele art prints, and handmade wire-and-bead crafts are other excellent picks.
South Africa uses a manual toll system on major intercity routes. As of March 2026, tariffs increased by 3.12%. Most plazas accept cash and cards; e-tags offer convenience. Gauteng urban freeways are toll-free. Always drive on the left, keep doors locked, and avoid stopping in isolated areas.

Roughly R 481 (about $29) a day at fair prices, or R 1,798 (about $110) at tourist prices. That covers two meals, a coffee, a bottle of water, a beer, two transit rides and a short taxi ride. Sightseeing comes on top (R 60 – R 300 for a top museum or attraction), and accommodation is not included.

The South African rand (ZAR). On October 3, 2026, 1 USD was worth 16.66 ZAR. Card terminals and ATMs that offer to charge you in your home currency usually give a worse rate, so pay in ZAR.
A restaurant main course is R 142 – R 340 (about $9 – $20) at fair prices, while tourist menus charge R 500 – R 800. A street food meal runs R 30 – R 80. A local beer is R 30 – R 60 (about $1.80 – $3.60), or R 80 – R 160 in tourist bars.
Budget roughly R 481 (about $29) a day for food, drinks and getting around at local prices, or about R 1,798 (about $110) at tourist prices. Add R 60 – R 300 for each major sight, plus your accommodation.
