Bargaining is accepted at Romanian open-air markets (piețe) for produce and crafts. At souvenir stalls and antique markets, negotiating 10–20% off is common, vendors often set higher initial prices expecting negotiation.

At Bucharest OTP airport and Gara de Nord, unregistered cabs charge 300–500 lei instead of 50 for the legal 3.50 lei/km official rate. Some impersonate Uber with a fake decal. Book Bolt (dominant in Romania) from the app, look for the yellow TAXI sign with phone number and rate card, and compare the plate against the app before you enter any car paying in lei.
In Bucharest's Old Town (Lipscani) and Brașov's Council Square, waiters present two menus. English prices 3–5× the Romanian. Solo patrons can be charged 200–500 lei for a beer. Free-standing ATMs near tourist sites are skimmed; 2024 BNR warning listed 60+ cases. Insist on the Romanian menu, pay small rounds, use only ATMs inside Banca Transilvania or BCR branches in Romania.
Romania has Europe's largest brown-bear population (~6,000). Bears raided 12 tourist roads in Brașov County 2024; a hiker was killed on Piatra Craiului. Don't stop the car to feed bears on DN1 Transfăgărășan, carry bear spray if trekking Retezat or Bucegi, and book mountain huts in lei only through Salvamont (the Romanian mountain rescue). Winter blizzards close passes above 1,400 m.
Romania uses a single unified emergency number (112) for police, ambulance, fire and SMURD. There are no separate national three-digit numbers in active public use.
Don't confuse Romanians with Roma people, it's a common and offensive mistake. Don't associate Romania with vampires in serious conversation either. Offer to remove your shoes when entering someone's home as a sign of respect.
Horezu painted ceramics, recognized by UNESCO, feature distinctive rooster and spiral motifs in earthy tones. Palincă (double-distilled fruit brandy, especially plum) is Romania's beloved spirit. Hand-embroidered traditional blouses (ie) and painted Easter eggs from Bucovina are exquisite folk art. Forest honey, Romanian wines from Dealu Mare, and carved wooden spoons from Maramureș are other authentic picks.
The Rovinieta is mandatory for all national roads, expressways, and motorways. For passenger cars, prices start at ~18 RON for 1 day, ~31 RON for 10 days, and ~50 RON for 30 days. Purchase online at roviniete.ro or at major gas stations. Enforcement is fully electronic via cameras; fines for non-compliance start at 500 RON.
