Tipping in Poland

Tipping 10% is standard in Polish restaurants. Check your bill first, if a service charge (opłata za obsługę) is already included, no additional tip is needed. Leave cash on the table or tell the waiter when paying by card.

Bargaining in Poland

Fixed prices are standard in Polish shops, restaurants and malls. At open-air flea markets (pchli targ) and antique fairs, gentle bargaining is acceptable and expected, you can typically get 10–20% off secondhand items.

Scams and safety in Poland

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Unofficial taxis and rideshare attacks

Passengers in Poland have been attacked, including sexual assaults, in unofficial taxis and in cars booked through ride hailing apps, and unlicensed drivers overcharge; touts work the Chopin airport arrivals hall and the main stations. Under current city rules a licensed cab in Warsaw or Kraków shows the city coat of arms and a side number on the front doors, a fare sticker on the rear right window and the driver's photo ID inside, so look for those, not a company logo, which is not required. Fares are capped too: Warsaw allows 10 złotych to start plus 5 per kilometre by day and 7.50 at night, Kraków 9 złotych plus 4 to 6 in the central zone. Book by app or take a marked rank.

Scam or crime Station and train pickpocketing

Pickpockets work Warsaw's main stations, Kraków Główny, the Old Town and the trams feeding it, and UK travel advice tells visitors to keep valuables out of sight at big stations and on all train services. Boarding crushes and dozing off are the openings. Poland's overnight trains run to Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Munich, and since December 2025 the Kraków to Prague leg is a couchette car with no sleeping car. Keep the passport and cards in an inside pocket, use both the door lock and the internal security latch, and sleep with your day bag by your pillow.

Scam or crime Card overcharging in late night bars

Visitors in Poland have been overcharged when paying for drinks by card at the end of the night in bars and nightclubs. Check the bill before you tap and read the amount on the terminal screen, not only the receipt. Spiked drinks are a related risk, and victims have been robbed after taking drinks from strangers.

Law Public alcohol fine and overnight detention

Drinking alcohol in a public place in Poland, a park, a bus stop, a street bench, the Rynek in Kraków or Warsaw's Old Town, is illegal: the usual on the spot fine is 100 złotych and an officer can set it up to 500. Cities can carve out exceptions, so drinking is legal on the marked stretch of Warsaw's Vistula boulevards, but nowhere else in town. Anyone visibly drunk can be held overnight in an izba wytrzeźwień sobering-up centre and billed for it, about 470 złotych a night in Warsaw and Kraków in 2026.

Law Reflective gear fine at night outside towns

After dusk, a pedestrian walking along a road outside a built-up area in Poland must wear something reflective, a band, vest or sticker, visible to drivers. It does not apply on a pedestrian path or a cycle path, and it binds pedestrians only: a cyclist needs working lights and reflectors on the bike instead. The ticket is up to 100 złotych, about 23 euros. It matters most on unlit rural roads near Zakopane, the Mazury lakes or the Baltic coast: police logged 315 crashes with pedestrians outside built-up areas in 2025 and 109 of them killed someone.

Law Validate your ticket or pay a fine

Public transport tickets in Poland must be validated at the start of the journey, in the machine on board or at the stop. Inspectors check without warning and issue an on the spot fine if your ticket is invalid or unvalidated, and simply having bought it is no defence. Keep the validated ticket until you get off.

Health Ticks in the forests, and TBE

Ticks are a real risk in Polish forests, parks and long grass from spring through autumn. They can carry tick-borne encephalitis, which attacks the central nervous system and has no specific antiviral treatment, as well as Lyme disease. A vaccine against TBE exists for endemic areas, and covering up, using repellent and checking your skin after a walk all cut the risk.

Nature Storms and avalanches in the Tatras

Summer thunderstorms are the deadliest hazard in the Polish Tatras, and rescue records count 14 fatal lightning strikes, on summits and even on the popular path around Morskie Oko. Storms build most often around midday in June and July, so start early and leave the ridge at the first sign of one. The halny wind gusts to 140 km per hour, and since 1909 avalanches have buried more than 250 people in the Polish Tatras.

Emergency numbers in Poland

Not sure who you need? Call this one. 112 Emergency number

112 is the single European emergency number and reaches a dispatch centre that alerts police, fire and medical services. Poland's older numbers still work: 997 police, 998 fire, 999 ambulance. Calls to 998 are already handled by the same 112 dispatch centres.

Medical costs

  • Doctor visit Private clinic, general consultation without insurance $40 – $90 ≈ zł 155–350
  • Hospital night One night in a general ward without insurance $300 – $500 ≈ zł 1,170–1,940
  • Ambulance Emergency transport to hospital $300 – $1,000 ≈ zł 1,170–3,890
  • Dentist Check-up or basic treatment at a private practice $30 – $90 ≈ zł 115–350

Typical private prices a tourist pays without insurance.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Odd flowers, eye contact

Always give an odd number of flowers, even numbers are reserved for funerals. Don't joke about WWII or the Holocaust. Look people in the eyes when raising a toast, breaking eye contact is considered rude.

Buying souvenirs 2 notes

Amber, pottery & Oscypek

Baltic amber jewelry is Poland's most iconic souvenir. Gdańsk's Mariacka Street has the widest selection, but verify authenticity. Bolesławiec pottery (hand-stamped stoneware with blue patterns) is beloved worldwide and cheapest at the source. Oscypek (smoked sheep's cheese from the Tatra Mountains) is a unique culinary treat. Polish vodka, miód pitny (mead), and hand-cut paper art (wycinanki) are other distinctly Polish gifts.

TAX FREE refund if you live outside the EU

Travellers who do not live in the European Union can reclaim Polish VAT on goods they carry home. The purchases on one seller's document must total at least 200 złoty including VAT, and the shop has to issue an electronic TAX FREE document. Customs then confirms the export electronically as you leave the EU, and only that confirmation releases the refund.

Driving and tolls 2 notes

Poland Highway toll system

Poland has no motorway vignette for cars. Only three concession sections are tolled for vehicles up to 3.5 t: A1 Gdańsk to Toruń (AmberOne), A2 Świecko to Konin (Autostrada Wielkopolska) and A4 Katowice to Kraków (Stalexport). Their toll plazas take cash in PLN, cards and apps such as AmberGo, Autopay, SkyCash, IKO or Yanosik, and registered plate reading lets you pass without stopping. Every other motorway is free for cars, including the state run A2 Konin to Stryków and A4 Wrocław to Sośnica near Gliwice, which stopped charging on 1 July 2023, so you do not need e-TOLL unless your car with trailer exceeds 3.5 t.

The papers Polish police will ask for

A British style photocard licence is accepted in Poland for up to six months, while an old paper licence needs the 1968 international driving permit alongside it. You must carry your licence and the vehicle documents and show them when police stop you, or they can take the vehicle and charge you the fees. Hire companies add their own conditions, such as a minimum age and a year of driving experience, and most will not let you take the car into Ukraine.

Did you know? 8 notes

  • Poland offers a rich heritage tourism experience, featuring well-preserved medieval old towns and significant historical sites with multilingual interpretive centers.
  • Pierogi (filled dumplings) are Poland's most iconic dish, with dozens of fillings from potato-cheese (ruskie) to meat, mushrooms, and even strawberries.
  • Poland and Russia both claim to have invented vodka. The oldest known written use of the word wódka comes from 1405 court records in Sandomierz, and today only spirit made entirely in Poland from Polish rye, wheat, barley, oat, triticale or potatoes may be labelled Polska Wódka.
  • The Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow was worked from the 13th century until mining ended in 1996 and has been on the UNESCO list since 1978. Its tourist route runs about 3.5 km at 135 m underground, past chapels, salt sculptures and salt crystal chandeliers.
  • More than 85 percent of Warsaw's historic centre was destroyed by Nazi troops during the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944. Residents rebuilt it in a five year campaign, recreating the market square, the townhouses, the city walls and the Royal Castle from archive records. UNESCO listed the result in 1980 as an outstanding example of near total reconstruction.
  • Białowieża Forest, on the border with Belarus, is a surviving piece of the primeval lowland forest that once covered much of Europe, and the transboundary site covers 141,885 hectares. It holds the largest population of European bison, around 900 animals, close to a quarter of the world total. It was one of Poland's first UNESCO World Heritage entries, inscribed in 1979.
  • Entry passes to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum are free for visits without an educator, and are paid only when you join a tour with a museum educator. They must be reserved online no later than seven days before the visit, or until the slots run out, and visit.auschwitz.org is the only official site that issues them. Passes are personalised and non refundable, so bring the ID you booked with.
  • Poland has been an EU member since 2004 and is one of the member states that does not use the euro. Prices, cash machines and card terminals all work in złoty, so budget in the local currency rather than assuming euro. Euro coins and notes are legal tender in only 21 of the 27 EU countries.

How much does a day in Poland cost, without flights and hotel?

Roughly zł 120 (about $31) a day at fair prices, or zł 255 (about $66) at tourist prices. That covers two meals, a coffee, a bottle of water, a beer, two transit rides and a short taxi ride. Sightseeing comes on top (zł 20–50 for a top museum or attraction), and accommodation is not included.

Do you tip in Poland, and how much?

Tipping 10% is standard in Polish restaurants. Check your bill first, if a service charge (opłata za obsługę) is already included, no additional tip is needed. Leave cash on the table or tell the waiter when paying by card.

What currency does Poland use?

The Polish zloty (PLN). On October 3, 2026, 1 USD was worth 3.889 PLN. Card terminals and ATMs that offer to charge you in your home currency usually give a worse rate, so pay in PLN.

How much money should I bring to Poland?

Budget roughly zł 120 (about $31) a day for food, drinks and getting around at local prices, or about zł 255 (about $66) at tourist prices. Add zł 20–50 for each major sight, plus your accommodation.

What is the emergency number in Poland?

Call 112, the general emergency number. Direct lines: police 997, ambulance 999, fire brigade 998.
