When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose MAD. The rate it offers is almost always worse.

Bargaining is absolutely essential in Moroccan souks, start at 30–40% of the asking price and use the walk-away tactic; sellers will often call you back with a better offer, especially in Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fna area.
What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.
In Marrakech, Fez and Chefchaouen medinas, young men offer to 'show the way' to Jemaa el-Fna or the tanneries, then demand 200–500 dirham after leading you to a carpet or argan-oil shop (where they earn commission). Licensed guides carry a gold-coloured 'Guide Officiel' badge with photo. Download a Maps.me offline map, refuse unsolicited directions, and only book through your riad or the Délégation du Tourisme.
In Casablanca, Marrakech and Fez, petit-taxi drivers refuse the official 'compteur' on airport or medina runs and charge 150–400 dirham instead of 30. At Marrakech RAK airport, licensed red/beige cabs use 100 dirham day / 150 night fixed to the city. Insist on 'compteur, s'il vous plaît' before entering, note the cab number on the door, and use InDrive or local Heetch app for a fixed quote.
Despite kif fields in the Rif, personal cannabis use is illegal (up to 1 year prison + 1,200 dirham fine). Public drunkenness carries the same. Unmarried cohabitation is illegal (article 490), hotels may demand a marriage certificate for a mixed-gender couple. Homosexual acts: 3 years prison. Do not smoke hash even when offered in Chefchaouen, drink only in licensed hotels/bars, and book 'double' rooms for married couples in dirhams only.
The High Atlas (Toubkal, Ifrane) drops to -20 °C in January, tourists die in light clothing. The Sahara (Merzouga, Erg Chebbi) exceeds 48 °C in summer with 0% humidity; dehydration kills in 2 hours. Atlantic rips at Taghazout, Essaouira and Agadir drown 10+ per year. The 2023 Al Haouz earthquake (M6.8, 3,000+ deaths) left fault lines. Pack wool for Atlas, 5 L water in dirham-budget for Sahara.
Morocco has no single national emergency number. Dial 190 for police, and 150 for ambulance and fire, which share one line.
Never use your left hand for eating, it's considered unclean in Moroccan culture. Never refuse tea when offered, as this is deeply offensive to your host and a serious breach of hospitality. Always ask permission before photographing people, especially in markets and rural areas.
Argan oil (culinary and cosmetic) is Morocco's liquid gold, buy from women's cooperatives for authenticity and fair trade. Berber rugs from the Atlas Mountains are handwoven masterpieces (each pattern tells a story). Leather babouche slippers from the tanneries of Fez, ras el hanout spice blends, and hand-painted ceramics from Fez and Safi are iconic Moroccan souvenirs. Thuya wood boxes and brass lanterns round out the options.
Morocco features a modern, well-maintained highway network. Tolls are distance-based and payable in cash (MAD) or by bank card at booths. For frequent travel, the 'Jawaz' RFID tag allows for faster, contactless passage. Keep small denominations of MAD cash handy for tolls to ensure smooth transit.
