Tipping in Hungary

Check your bill for a 'szervizdíj' (service charge). If included (10-15%), no extra tip is required. If not, 10% is standard for good service. Always hand cash directly to the waiter rather than leaving it on the table.

Bargaining in Hungary

Fixed prices are the norm in Hungarian shops. At the Ecseri flea market in Budapest, bargaining on antiques and second-hand goods is expected, start by offering 50–60% of the asking price and settle around 70–80%.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Never clink beer glasses

Don't clink beer glasses, this tradition dates from 1848, when Austrians clinked beers celebrating the execution of Hungarian generals. Wine and spirits clinking is fine. Always look in the eyes when toasting.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Paprika, Tokaji & Herend porcelain

Hungarian paprika (sweet and hot varieties) from Szeged or Kalocsa is a kitchen essential, buy at the Great Market Hall in Budapest. Tokaji Aszú wine is one of the world's greatest dessert wines. Herend porcelain is exquisite but pricey; Zsolnay ceramics offer a more affordable alternative. Pálinka (fruit brandy), Pick salami, and embroidered textiles from Kalocsa are other favorites.

Driving and tolls 1 note

E-vignette (E-Matrica)

Hungary uses a digital e-vignette system linked to your license plate. Purchase it at nemzetiutdij.hu before entering toll roads. A 10-day D1 pass costs 6,900 HUF. Driving without a valid vignette results in heavy fines. Enforcement is automated via cameras.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • Budapest has more than 120 natural hot springs, making it the thermal bath capital of the world. The Szechenyi and Gellert baths are the most famous.
  • The Rubik's Cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian professor Erno Rubik. It became the world's best-selling toy.
  • Paprika is Hungary's signature spice, used in almost everything from goulash to sausages. Hungarian paprika is protected by EU designation of origin.
