Bargaining is not part of Costa Rican culture ("Ticos" find it uncomfortable). Prices in shops, markets, and tourist areas are fixed. The only exceptions are longer-term rentals or large purchases, where politely asking for a deal is occasionally acceptable.
What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.
On Highway 1 leaving San José airport and Highway 27 to Jacó, thieves puncture rental-car tires at gas stations, then 'helpfully' approach to fix it while an accomplice empties the back seat: 3,000–20,000 colones of valuables gone. Hotspots: gas stations in La Sabana, Escazú and Orotina. Check tires every stop, lock valuables in the boot, refuse all 'help' at gas stations, and pay only at attended pumps in colones.
Drug rules and adventure insurance: Costa Rica treats possession and trafficking severely and the minimum sentence is 8 years in prison. Personal consumption is not prosecuted, but the law defines no minimum quantity, so the amount is judged by police and prosecutors and sharing can be charged as trafficking. You can drive on your home licence for up to 180 days, so use licensed ATV operators and check helmets and papers rather than hunting for a local licence. Standard travel insurance often excludes quad biking, surfing and zip lining, so confirm your policy names those activities before you book.
Pacific beaches at Jacó, Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio have strong rip currents: 15+ tourist drownings in 2024. White-faced capuchin and howler monkeys in Manuel Antonio National Park bite tourists who feed them; rabies post-exposure prophylaxis costs 80,000 colones. Swim only at staffed beaches between flags, never feed or touch monkeys, and carry a rabies advance-cover insurance quote in colones.
In Costa Rica, 911 is the single emergency number for police, ambulance and fire, and it covers the whole country. Dial 911 for any emergency.
"Pura vida" is a genuine lifestyle philosophy, not just a catchphrase, don't use it mockingly or sarcastically. Pointing with lips is common and polite here, while pointing with a finger is considered rude. Ticos value indirect, gentle communication over bluntness.
Costa Rican coffee from Tarrazú or Central Valley is world-class, look for whole beans at local beneficios (processing mills). Salsa Lizano, the country's beloved condiment, is a must-buy for foodies. Organic chocolate from Cahuita, hand-carved wooden bowls, and colorful painted oxcart miniatures (carretas) represent traditional Costa Rican craftsmanship.
Costa Rica has a few toll roads including Ruta 27 to the Pacific coast, costing CRC 200–1,700 ($0.40, $3.30) per plaza, cash in colones only. Self-driving is very popular with tourists. Keep small bills handy for tolls. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for rural areas during the rainy season, and watch out for potholes even on main roads.

The Costa Rican colon (CRC). On October 3, 2026, 1 USD was worth 456.7 CRC. Card terminals and ATMs that offer to charge you in your home currency usually give a worse rate, so pay in CRC.
A restaurant main course is ₡6,000 – ₡15,000 (about $13 – $33) at fair prices, while tourist menus charge ₡25,000 – ₡60,000. A street food meal runs ₡1,500 – ₡3,000. A local beer is ₡1,400 – ₡3,000 (about $3.10 – $6.60), or ₡3,500 – ₡6,000 in tourist bars.
