Scams and safety in Bulgaria

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Sunny Beach bar and club overcharge

On Bulgaria's Sunny Beach strip and in central Burgas, English-speaking 'promoters' lure solo tourists to bars where a shot becomes 25 EUR instead of 2, bills reach 400–1,000 EUR with bouncers at the door. Use bars on Tripadvisor's 100+ review list, pay small rounds in cash per drink, and photograph the menu on entry. Keep a backup 100 EUR in a separate wallet in case a card is blocked.

Scam or crime Sofia taxi meter and currency change trap

At Sofia SOF airport, fake 'OK Supertrans' taxis use rate stickers starting at 1.80 EUR per km, official rate is 0.46 EUR. Exchange booths marked 'no commission' next to them give counterfeit notes or try to pass off obsolete lev banknotes (no longer legal tender since 2026). Use OK Supertrans (+359 2 973 2121) or Yellow-plate Sofia Taxi, change at Bulbank or Piraeus, and look for 0.40–0.46 EUR per km on the front door sticker.

Nature Black Sea currents and Rila-Pirin storms

Rip currents along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast at Golden Sands, Sunny Beach and Sozopol drown 10–15 tourists per summer: 2023 saw red-flag enforcement with 100 EUR fines. Rila and Pirin mountain storms above 2,000 m kill hikers caught without waterproofs; lightning can follow within 10 minutes. Obey flag warnings, file a Bulgarian Mountain Rescue (planinska-spasitelna-sluzhba.bg) route note, and pack waterproofs for July–August.

Emergency numbers in Bulgaria

Not sure who you need? Call this one. 112 Emergency number Covers police, ambulance, and fire brigade

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Nods mean the opposite

Nodding means "no" and shaking your head means "yes", the opposite of most countries! This catches almost every tourist off guard. Verbal confirmation is safest: "da" means yes in Bulgarian.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Rose oil & yogurt culture

Bulgaria produces 85% of the world's rose oil, pick up rose water, rose jam, or rose oil in the Valley of Roses region. Bulgarian yogurt starter (Lactobacillus bulgaricus) lets you make authentic yogurt at home. Rakija, hand-painted ceramics, and lavender products from Thrace are other excellent souvenirs.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Bulgaria E-vignette requirement

Bulgaria requires an electronic vignette for all motorways and first-class roads. Purchase online at bgtoll.bg before travel. Prices (2026): 1-day €4.09, weekend €5.11, 7-day €7.67. Enforcement is via automated cameras; fines for non-compliance are approximately €153. No physical sticker is needed.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • Bulgarian yogurt is famous worldwide. The specific bacteria used to make it (Lactobacillus bulgaricus) was first identified in Bulgaria and bears its name.
  • Bulgaria produces approximately 70% of the world's rose oil, a key ingredient in luxury perfumery. The Rose Valley near Kazanlak blooms in late May and June, hosting the annual Rose Festival.
  • Like Albania, Bulgarians shake their head for "yes" and nod for "no." This catches many tourists off guard, so watch for context cues.
