Tipping in the United Kingdom

In restaurants 10 to 12.5% is normal, but many places already add a discretionary service charge to the bill: check before adding more so you do not tip twice. You do not tip when ordering at a pub or bar. Rounding up a taxi fare is appreciated but not required.

Bargaining in the United Kingdom

Prices in shops, restaurants and on transport are fixed and bargaining is not expected. The exception is street and antiques markets such as Camden, Portobello Road and Brick Lane, where a polite offer on craft, vintage and souvenir stalls is fine, especially near closing time.

Scams and safety in the United Kingdom

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Unlicensed minicabs touting for fares

People offering rides outside stations, clubs and airports are often unlicensed and may overcharge or be unsafe. Use a licensed black cab (hail in the street or at a rank) or book an app or pre-booked minicab. A licensed minicab cannot legally be hailed in the street.

Scam or crime Three-cup shell game on bridges

On Westminster Bridge and around tourist hotspots, a person shuffles three cups and a ball and invites bets. It is rigged and you will always lose; accomplices in the crowd pretend to win and act as lookouts and pickpockets. Walk past and keep your bag and phone secure.

Scam or crime Fake charity clipboard collectors

People with clipboards ask you to sign a petition or donate to a charity, then pressure you for cash or distract you while an accomplice picks your pocket. Genuine charities rarely demand on-the-spot cash. Keep walking, decline politely, and watch your belongings.

Scam or crime Pickpockets on Oxford street and the Tube

Crowded shopping streets, the Tube and tourist areas are prime spots for pickpockets and phone snatchers, often on bicycles or e-bikes near the kerb. Keep your phone in an inside pocket, do not leave bags open, and stay alert when streets are busy.

Scam or crime Pedicab and rickshaw overcharging scams

In the West End, unlicensed pedicab drivers overcharge tourists for short journeys and drive dangerously. Westminster Council has issued fines for these practices. Use licensed taxis or pre-booked services instead.

Emergency numbers in the United Kingdom

Not sure who you need? Call this one. 999 Emergency number Covers police, ambulance, and fire brigade

In the UK, dial 999 for any emergency and tell the operator whether you need police, ambulance or fire. Call 999 whenever someone is in immediate danger or a crime is in progress.

Medical costs

  • Doctor visit GP and A&E (emergency) treatment is free at the point of use for everyone, including visitors, for immediate and urgent care. For routine, non-urgent care many tourists use a private GP clinic, where a consultation typically costs around 80 to 250 USD. Travel insurance is strongly recommended. $75 – $320 ≈ £57 – £240
  • One night in hospital Immediate A&E treatment is free, but non-resident visitors are billed 150% of the NHS national tariff for admitted hospital care such as an inpatient stay. A night on a ward, including treatment, commonly costs from about 600 to 1500 USD or more depending on the care. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential. $600 – $1,500 ≈ £455 – £1,130
  • Ambulance call-out Emergency ambulance transport in a medical emergency is free for everyone in the UK, including visitors. Call 999 (or 112). Do not delay calling because of cost. Onward hospital care for non-residents may be charged at 150% of the NHS tariff, so travel insurance is recommended. Free
  • Dentist visit Emergency NHS dental care for visitors is charged, and most tourists use private dentists. A check-up or simple treatment typically runs from about 70 to 150 USD, while a filling or more involved work can reach 350 USD or more. Travel or dental insurance is advised. $70 – $350 ≈ £53 – £265

Typical private prices a tourist pays without insurance.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Queue politely and order at the bar in pubs

Queuing is taken seriously: join the back of the line and never push in. In most pubs there is no table service: order and pay at the bar, then carry your drinks to your table. On escalators, especially in the Tube, stand on the right and leave the left side clear for people walking.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Skip the tourist-trap souvenir shops

Souvenir shops clustered around Leicester Square and Oxford Street sell overpriced, low-quality trinkets. You will find better value at museum gift shops, Borough Market or independent shops. Remember that most major national museums (British Museum, National Gallery, Tate, Natural History) are free to enter.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Drive on the left and mind London's road charges

In the UK you drive on the left. Central London has a daily Congestion Charge (£18 from January 2026) plus the ULEZ charge (£12.50) for older, non-compliant vehicles; both must be paid online, with no toll booths. The M6 Toll near Birmingham is a paid motorway. Fuel is sold per litre, around £1.35.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • The price you see on a shelf or menu is the price you pay: VAT (currently 20% on most goods) is already included. There is no extra tax added at the till as in the United States, which makes budgeting straightforward.
  • Major national museums and galleries, including the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tate, the Natural History Museum and the V&A, offer free general admission. Special exhibitions and famous paid attractions like the Tower of London still charge, but you can fill days with world-class culture for nothing.
  • Pubs are central to British social life. In most you order and pay at the bar rather than waiting for table service, and tipping bar staff is not expected. Beer is sold by the pint (about 568 ml) or half-pint, and many pubs serve food and welcome families during the day.

Common questions about prices in the United Kingdom

Is the United Kingdom expensive to visit?

Short answer: expensive, even at local prices. Fair prices are about 2.2× the 60-country median, and tourist prices are about 2.2× the fair price. On the TruePrice Index, the United Kingdom scores 222, the 3rd most expensive of the 60 countries I track.

How much does a day in the United Kingdom cost, without flights and hotel?

Roughly £51 (about $67) a day at fair prices, or £109 (about $145) at tourist prices. That covers two meals, a coffee, a bottle of water, a beer, two transit rides and a short taxi ride. Sightseeing comes on top (£30 – £40 for a top museum or attraction), and accommodation is not included.

Do you tip in the United Kingdom, and how much?

In restaurants 10 to 12.5% is normal, but many places already add a discretionary service charge to the bill: check before adding more so you do not tip twice. You do not tip when ordering at a pub or bar. Rounding up a taxi fare is appreciated but not required.

What currency does the United Kingdom use?

The British pound (GBP). On October 3, 2026, 1 USD was worth 0.7563 GBP. Card terminals and ATMs that offer to charge you in your home currency usually give a worse rate, so pay in GBP.

A restaurant main course is £15 – £28 (about $20 – $37) at fair prices, while tourist menus charge £40 – £70. A street food meal runs £7 – £12. A local beer is £4.50 – £6.50 (about $5.90 – $8.60), or £7.50 – £10.00 in tourist bars.

How much money should I bring to the United Kingdom?

Budget roughly £51 (about $67) a day for food, drinks and getting around at local prices, or about £109 (about $145) at tourist prices. Add £30 – £40 for each major sight, plus your accommodation.

What is the emergency number in the United Kingdom?

Call 999, the general emergency number. Use it for police, ambulance, and fire brigade.
