When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose DOP. The rate it offers is almost always worse.
Dominican restaurant bills automatically add a 10 percent service charge, on top of 18 percent ITBIS sales tax, so read the bill before you pay. That service charge is not the server's tip: it is customary to leave an extra 10 percent for good service. At all inclusive resorts, 1 to 2 USD per service for bellboys, bartenders and housekeeping is normal and much appreciated.
Bargaining is common at Dominican street markets, souvenir stalls, and with beach vendors. Prices quoted to tourists are often inflated, expect to negotiate 20–40% off the initial price. Be pleasant and don't take it too seriously; it's often a friendly exchange.

Scammers operate fake websites that mimic the official Dominican Republic immigration portal, charging tourists $20-$500 for a mandatory 'e-ticket' that is 100% free on the government site. To avoid this, only use the official URL: eticket.migracion.gob.do. Never click on sponsored search ads for e-tickets and never enter credit card details on any site claiming to charge for this form.
In the Dominican Republic, 911 is the single emergency number for police, ambulance and fire. Coverage is strongest in Santo Domingo and the main cities and can be unreliable in remote areas.
Don't confuse Dominicans with Haitians, it's a sensitive and complex cultural distinction. Pointing with lips is common here and perfectly polite. Close personal space during conversation is normal, don't back away, as it's considered cold and unfriendly.
Larimar, a sky-blue semi-precious stone found only in the Dominican Republic, makes stunning jewelry, buy from certified shops. Dominican rum (Brugal, Barceló) rivals Cuban rum in quality. Cigars from the Cibao Valley are world-class. Mamajuana (a rum-soaked herbal drink) comes in decorative bottles, and organic cacao from the north makes an excellent edible gift.
