Bargaining is not part of Brazilian culture in shops, restaurants, or most markets. Prices are fixed and attempting to haggle may cause embarrassment. At large street fairs ("feiras"), asking politely for a small discount rarely offends but is unusual.
No scam or safety notes in English for this country yet. I add them as soon as they are checked.
In Brazil, there is no single universal emergency number. Dial 190 for police, 192 for ambulance (SAMU), 193 for fire.
The OK gesture (thumb-index circle) is extremely offensive in Brazil, equivalent to the middle finger! Use a thumbs up instead to show approval. Don't speak Spanish to Brazilians, they speak Portuguese and the confusion is considered insulting.
Brazilian coffee beans, especially single-origin from Minas Gerais, make a universally appreciated gift. Cachaça (sugarcane spirit) is essential for making caipirinhas at home. Brazil is the world's top gemstone producer: look for amethyst, tourmaline, and aquamarine in certified shops. Havaianas flip-flops are cheaper here than anywhere else.
Brazil has an extensive toll system, especially in the southeast. São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro costs about R$ 60–90 ($12–18) in tolls. Many plazas accept contactless card payments alongside cash and the Sem Parar RFID system. Southeast roads are excellent. Exercise caution when driving at night outside cities.
The prices on this page are typical for these cities and the tourist areas around them.
